New Images and Tim McCarver

Tim McCarver, 1968 Topps

Tim McCarver, 1968 Topps

I scanned and uploaded the front and backs of 70 more cards last night giving me a total of 6608 images taking up over a gig of space. I’m not going to say how long it’s taken to get to this point but every so often I wonder if this is truly worth the effort. Lucky for me I ran across this little gem last night that changed my mind, a Tim McCarver card from 1968.

Most people know Tim McCarver from the over 1 billion Regular, Post Season, and World Series games on which he has been a commentator, but did you know that his career in the MLB spanned 4 decades?! I’m sure you probably did and I don’t really care about that. You only have to play for 21 years to reach that milestone (Guess how many years he played…21) and there are many players who have had 20+ year careers.

If I haven’t mention it before, I dislike Tim McCarver. I find the sound of his voice very distasteful and his commentary is sub-par, bordering on garbage.

The real reason this card is a gem is because it’s like a look into the future from 1968. Maybe it’s just the poor image quality like a lot of cards from this time frame but he looks eerily similar to himself now, add a few wrinkles to his face and dye that fur coat of arm hair gray and you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. I like to imagine him sitting on the bench in 1968 annoying his teammates with crappy color commentary.

Apparently I’m not the only one who doesn’t care for Mr. McCarver so I will leave you with a link today. Enjoy!

New Page and Trade Info

October 8th, 2009 Jeff No comments

I have added a new page this morning that lists the many duplicates in my collection. These cards are available for trade and sale. Although, I’d prefer not to do sales but if you really really want something make me an offer and I’ll see what I can do.

Just to reiterate the words of caution I wrote on the page itself. Many of the cards in this collection are not in the greatest condition and this is especially true for the duplicates. I tried to rate the cards as best I could but I am not a professional card grader and in fact I wouldn’t even consider myself an amateur. This leads to somewhat erratically rated cards. In addition to this the card image on the info page is not necessarily the scan of the card that is up for trade.

I understand these issues are big for many collectors so I am willing to take images with my fancy digital camera before any deal is done. The quality should be much better than my scans anyway.

What am I looking for?? Anything I don’t have, be it cards missing from sets I have or cards from sets I don’t have. Quality isn’t a huge issue for me but I don’t want anything in horrible condition.

Find something you want to trade? Head over to the Contact Form and let me know!

302 new records were added this evening. It’s quite the mix of cards with the largest span of years yet, 1969-2009. Images will be added sporadically until all of them have been scanned.

I’ve just added 100+ new records to the database and I’m working on getting all these bad boys scanned it. I’ve also cleaned up numerous stupid data entry errors so things are a little more crispy. If you notice any errors please click the “report errors” button and let me know!

Gum from 1988? What Could Go Wrong?!

September 24th, 2009 Jeff No comments
Allen & Ginters 2008 Mike Hampton Relic

2008 Allen & Ginters Mike Hampton Relic from a variety pack I purchased at Target.

I don’t buy many new baseball cards but when I feel the need I purchase from wal-mart/target/etc. in variety packs since I’m usually more concerned with getting the most cards for my money. Sometimes I can score something cool but more often than not they pack a couple of relatively new with a couple of old sets, not very exciting.

Anyway, a couple of days ago I picked up a “Championship Collection” with 8 factory sealed packs. The box claims that there are over $18 worth of cards here and it only cost me $10! I’m not gonna say I’m not a sucker but I like cheap things and it adds some variety to my very early 90′s centric card collection. Inside this box were some 2008 Topps, 2007 Upper Deck, 1994Fleer Ultra, 2007 Topps Chrome and some other non-memorable packs.

Hidden at the bottom of the box like a leper was a pack of 1988 Donruss, obviously put it there so the consumer could never accidentally see it and not buy the box. I was pretty disappointed as I have more than a few Donruss 1988 and they are some of the ugliest baseball cards I have ever seen. On the plus side I now have 15 1988 Donruss in good condition.

This was an orginal factory sealed pack so it was in the wax paper wrapper and it had a piece of gum! I think that whole gum thing was fading away when I amassing most of my collection, I did get packs that contained gum but the vast majority of baseball cards that were purchased for me did not have gum. I seem to remember that the gum was always stale and it would turn to powder in your mouth before magically congealing into a gummy wad at which point it would be flavorless and I would spit it out. Such a fickle uncaring child I was.

Now I’m an adult and am fully aware that this gum was more than likely produced a few years before the cards were packaged but I could not resist the chance to eat the gum. I was sitting in the car outside the store with my wife and told her “We need to eat this right now” and she agreed. As I picked it up from the top of the pack it felt the same as I remember, light and stiff with just a hint of flour or cornstarch. I put it up to my nose drawing a couple quick whiffs, still smelled like I remember. I was starting to get excited. I gently snapped it into two halves and passed one to my wife, we simultaneously popped into our mouths and began chewing….oh the HORRORS that were to follow.

The gum started like most other cheap baseball card gum, it instantly became granular in my mouth but something was missing. The flavor that is usually quick to tickle my tastebuds, even it was for such a short time, was delayed. I knew something was about to go wrong but unlike astronauts who have an abort button to cancel a seemingly harmful situation, I had no such button and was commited the point my teeth started grinding up my chalky prize. I continued chewing and the flavor never came, the 20 plus years of imprisonment inside the pack of cards had leeched any sweet flavor and replaced it with a waxy flavor I could only describe as “crayony”.

As I mentioned before most baseball card gum I’d ever eaten has started out granular and quickly congeleled into something one could recognize as gum. This gum certainly started out granular but the coagulation I was expecting just never happened. I chewed vigorously trying to coax out a little gummyness but alas it was not to be. Disgusted, we both opened the card doors and spat out what looked like unicorn vomit. I feel sorry for the people that parked in that spot after we left, who knows what they though those chunky pink puddles were.

I guess the moral of my story, if there is one, is don’t eat gum from the mid to late 1980′s. I guess adults really shouldn’t have to be told that…

Update!

September 21st, 2009 Jeff No comments

A whole bunch of new images added today, close to 400 I think, for the 2007 Upper Deck Series. At the moment all records have images. I should have a new set of records included in the database tomorrow, but that depends on if I decide to be lazy after work :D .

Mitch Williams, Baseball Ninja

September 18th, 2009 Jeff 1 comment
Studio Card # 280, Mitch Williams
1992 Studio Card #280, Mitch Williams

What is the most effective way to keep a voluminous mullet out of your face while you’re pitching? You probably think that a red Philadelphia Phillies cap would do an adequate job. Well let me tell you something simpleton, no hat can corral such a mighty tuft of hair.

When you are hurling baseballs at your opponents with the ferocity and finesse of the best ninjas wielding the finest of throwing stars you cannot rely on the pathetically weak hat fabrics. Thoes hats are probably made in China anyway and China is all about hindering ninjas. You can only rely on a headband woven in the highest, coldest parts of Japan from the best japanese money fur. And yes, these monkeys are killed for their fur becuse it’s the easiest way to unlock the power.

I’m sure Mr.Williams though he was the baddest dude on set the day this photograph was shot but holy moly he looks like the biggest tool in the world here. At least his fans in Philadelphia liked him…

“However, he is perhaps best known for a blown save after giving up a walk-off home run to Joe Carter of the Toronto Blue Jays in the sixth game of the 1993 World Series, which gave Toronto their second consecutive World Championship.” -Wikipedia

LOL oops.

About 125 new records added today. These are actually cards from within the past couple year no the crappy 80′s and 90′s stuff from before. I’ll probably finish up my recent stuff in the next day or so and then back to the many boxes of old stuff.

Updates

September 13th, 2009 Jeff No comments

So I’ve been a little slow in posting updates but there have been a couple since the last post. Lost of new cards and lots of new images have been posted within the last week, I’m talking nearly 500 cards and almost 1000 images so I’ve been a busy typing and scanning. I’ve nearly completed the first, and probably largest, box of cards in the collection and I’m sitting at about 2300 cards entered and scanned. At the moment I do believe that every card should have front and back images so if you see one that doesn’t within the next couple days please bring it to my attention because I messed something up!

Coming up in the next few days/weeks I have some newer cards (Upper Deck 2007 Series 1 and 2) to enter and scan and after that more of the old stuff. Oh the excitement!
